Mecca Beach – Mecca, CA – April 2018
Expectations of adulthood. The role of a women as mother/caregiver. The societal pressure to procreate combined with the biological urges of motherly impulses. These pushed me to serve a sour dinner of dead fish skeletons. Topped only with the entirety of a canister of salt; Morton Salt; the Morton Salt girl adorned our suppers. The supper for four with no one but myself in presence. Wearing a blue dress: a belly about to burst. I served those fish bones with tongs, smothering them in salt. Then one by one, cut the roses off the plastic bouquet centerpiece, tossing them about. Once dinner was served, I leaned over and popped the balloon; the fake baby in my belly: the visual representation of societies expectations of me.
