The question of stretchers

Ever since I began my abstract work, and even as I was moving away from the tendency toward representation, I was questioning the stretcher bar structure that holds a piece of canvas. It seemed an oddity to me, a boundary. Being introduced to Artist Sam Gilliam’s work last summer was a revelation for me. A questioning of the stretcher bar that eliminated it entirely. This article is about Sharon Butler’s work, and how she questions the stretcher. She doesn’t get rid of it entirely, but brings attention to it.
