There is a great amount of similarity between drawing and painting and not in the way most people equate. Drawing is not merely a preliminary to painting, its an entirely different experience of material use and mark-making. My initial marks in a painting, whether measurements, blocking in or gestural, always remain as an element of the paintings development and both visual and tactile language. A beautiful mark, to me, is one that is restated into perfection, with every mark before just as necessary to understanding as well as communicating clarity and feeling. Tool influences mark, material influences mark, size and scale influence mark, orientation of the artists body – sitting, standing – influences mark. Surface location – on the wall, on an easel, on the floor – influences mark.
There’s an intensity of feeling in physical mark. Touch on surface becomes visual information.
